 say 와 tell

① 표면적으로는 둘 다 '말하다'라는 의미를 갖지만 특히 'tell은 어떤 것을 알려주거나(inform) 가르칠 (instruct) 때' 쓴다. 이런 의미로는 say를 쓸 수 없다.

 He said to me that it was my last chance.

→ He told me that it was my last chance.

 He said to me 'Good morning.'

↔ He told me, 'Good morning.'(*)

 'What's your problem?' I said.

↔ 'What's your problem?' I told her.(*)

② tell 뒤에는 말을 듣는 대상(사람)이 와야한다(목적어로 사람을 취한다). 반면에 say는 사람을 목적어로 취하지 않는다. 사람을 표시하려면 전치사 to를 붙인다. 예외적으로 tell a lie, tell a story/joke, tell the truth 등에는 사람을 목적어로 쓰지 않는다.

 She told me that she would be late.

 She told that she would be late.(*)

 She said me that she would be late.(*)

 She said to me that she would be late.

③ tell의 목적어로 a word, a name, a sentence, a phrase 등이 올 때는 tell을 쓰지 못한다. say를 쓴다.

 Alice told a meaningful word this morning.(*)

 Alice said a meaningful word this morning.

④ tell은 목적보어에 to부정사를 취할 수 있지만 say는 목적보어를 취할 수 없다.

 I told the children to go away.

 I said the children to go away.(*)

⑤ say나 tell은 간접적으로 질문하는 문장을 이끌 수 없다.

 Bill said whether I wanted to see a film.(*)

 Bill told whether I wanted to see a film.(*)

 Bill asked whether I wanted to see a film.
